The 3-Day Advantage: Why Consistent Early Learning is the Key to School Readiness
The Australian Government and leading educators recognise that three days of early learning is the “golden ratio” for a child’s development. While many search for the 3 day childcare guarantee, at Dinky Di, we see it as more than a spot in a room—it’s a commitment to your child’s social, emotional, and cognitive future.
Whether you are at our Morisset, Tumbi or Terrigal centres, we prioritise consistent attendance to ensure every child transitions to school with confidence.
What is the 3 Day Guarantee?
The 3-day guarantee is an Australian Government Child Care Subsidy change that started on 5 January 2026. Under the new rules, eligible families can access at least 72 hours of subsidised child care per fortnight, which is equivalent to 3 days per week.
At The Hive Academy, we see this as more than a change to Child Care Subsidy. For many children, three consistent days of early learning can make a real difference to confidence, friendships, routine and school readiness.
Some families may still be eligible for up to 100 hours of subsidised care per fortnight, including families with higher recognised activity, families caring for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander child, and families with approved exemptions or exceptional circumstances.
Families must still meet Child Care Subsidy eligibility requirements. The 3 Day Guarantee does not guarantee a place at a centre, so families still need to secure an enrolment and may still need to pay a gap fee.
Why 3 Days? The Educator’s Perspective
Our team of early educators see a significant difference in children who attend at least three days a week compared to those who attend one or two. Here’s why:
- Establishing a Rhythm: Children thrive on routine. Three days allows them to “anchor” their week, reducing separation anxiety and helping them feel safe enough to take risks in their learning.
- Deepening Social Connections: Forming friendships takes time. Consistent attendance allows children to move past “parallel play” and into collaborative, complex social interactions.
- The School Readiness Program: Our curriculum is designed to be immersive. Three days ensures your child doesn’t miss out on the sequential building blocks of literacy, numeracy, and emotional regulation.
How consistent attendance supports school readiness
Starting school is a big step, and the years before school play an important role in helping children feel ready, confident and capable.
Consistent attendance gives children time to settle into routines, build strong relationships with educators and develop friendships with other children. It also helps them take part in the full learning program across the week, rather than only experiencing small parts of it.
At Dinky Di, our school readiness approach is built into everyday learning. Through play, group experiences, conversations, problem-solving and guided activities, children develop important skills such as independence, communication, emotional regulation, confidence, early literacy and numeracy, and the ability to participate in a group setting.
For many children, attending three days a week provides the consistency they need to feel secure, engaged and ready to learn.
NSW Start Strong fee relief for long day care
In addition to the Australian Government Child Care Subsidy, eligible NSW families may also be able to receive Start Strong fee relief for children attending long day care.
Start Strong fee relief is designed to help reduce out-of-pocket costs for eligible 3-year-old and 4-year-old children in NSW early childhood education and care services.
For long day care, Child Care Subsidy is applied first, then Start Strong fee relief is applied as a further reduction to your fees. Families may still need to pay any remaining fees or levies after fee relief has been applied.
To access NSW fee relief, families need to complete a fee relief declaration and consent form. Fee relief can only be claimed at one participating service at a time, so families will need to nominate the service where they would like the fee relief applied.
Our team can help explain the process and let you know what information is needed when you enrol.
